History of the Faculty

The history of the Faculty of Geography began in 1940, from the Nature and Geography Department of Kremenets Teachers' Institute.

With the outbreak of the World War II, the department and the entire Institute stopped their functioning until the liberation of Kremenets in March 1944.

In 1969 the Pedagogical Institute was transferred from Kremenets to Ternopil. Only in 1981, the students got the possibility to enter the specialty “Geography and Biology” at Ternopil Pedagogical Institute. A year later, in 1982, the Department of Geography was established at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. It had been functioning for three years, and then was divided into two separate educational units — Department of Physical Geography and Department of Economic and Social Geography.

In 1990, the Scientific Council of Ternopil Pedagogical Institute decided to establish a separate Faculty of Geography.

Since 1992, the authority of the Institute gave the departments the possibility to train highly qualified specialists independently. First, postgraduate studies were opened at the Department of Economic and Social Geography, and then — at the Departments of Physical Geography, Geography of Ukraine, Geoecology and Methods of Teaching Environmental Sciences.

Educational Work

Centers of student self-government bodies, ecological, speleological and tourist clubs function at the Faculty of Geography and involve a substantial part of the student youth in its activities. They organize scientific and educational expeditions, hiking, environmental events and festivals.

Faculty students are active participants of different sports and mass events. Our teams constantly become winners of football, volleyball, basketball, tennis and athletics competitions. A significant number of students attend sports sections and workshops, participate in university contests and specialized sports tournaments of Ternopil and the region. They show excellent results during intellectual and entertaining competitions as well.

In 2008, master students of the Faculty founded an information and journalism club, which works on the publication of the “Mapa” monthly newspaper.
