History of the Department

The Department was officially founded in 1981. The first Head of the Department was Doctor of Philosophy, Professor H.Yu. Kikets. Since 1984, the Department has undergone several reorganizations and divisions. Throughout the years there were different heads of Department, such as V.M. Kalashnyk, S.Yu. Trubych, V.V. Starodubets, O.V. Ohyr, V.I. Shanaida, M.H. Bratasiuk.


In 1993, three Departments were established: the Department of Philosophy (Head – Assoc. Prof. V. I. Shanaida), Economic Theory (Head – Assoc. Prof. A.A. Hryhoruk), Sociology and Logic (Head – Assoc. Prof. O.V. Ohyr). In 1996, the Departments were disbanded and the Department of Philosophy and Economic Theory was established on their basis.


Since 1996 and until now the Department is headed by PhD in Economic Sciences, Associate Professor Hryhoruk Anatolii Ananiiovych.

Educational and Methodical Work

Since 2018, the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences has been teaching specialists in the specialty 033. Philosophy. After completing the curriculum, specialists are awarded the following qualifications: Bachelor of Philosophy, Analyst of Social Processes (4 years of study) and Master of Philosophy, Analyst of Social Processes, Teacher of Social sciences (1,4 years of study). The staff of the Department continues to work on the development of new courses and special courses. Particular attention is paid to improving pedagogical and lecturing skills. Since 2016, Prof. Pavlyshyn L.H. teaches the course “Philosophy” in English for students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages (English Philology and Translation). Three teachers of the Department received their second higher education: Assoc. Prof. Morska N.L. graduated from Ternopil National Economic University with a degree in Business Economics (2009) and the National Academy of Internal Affairs with a degree in Jurisprudence (2016); Assoc. Prof. Hrushko V.S. graduated from Ternopil National Economic University, majoring in International Economics (2017); Assoc. Prof. Petryshyn H.R. graduated from Mykolaiv Interregional Institute of Human Development of Higher Educational Institution, Open International University of Human Development “Ukraine” majoring in Sociology (2017).


Teachers of the Department underwent internships in leading universities of Ukraine and abroad: in 2010 Prof. Buyak B.B. participated in the international internship program at the US Department of State for the heads of Ukrainian higher education institutions “INTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM” (Washington, Raleigh, Boston); in February 2015, he participated in the professional exchange program at the Meridian International Center for International Exchanges “Academic Integrity” in the US (Washington, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, Boston) with the assistance of the US Embassy in Ukraine; during 2013-2016 he was a participant in the international training project of the TEMPUS program “ELITE” Education for Leadership, Intelligence and Talent Encouraging 544343-TEMPUS-1-2013-1-LT-TEMPUS-SMHES “Education for Leadership, Intelligence and Talent Encouraging”; on May 19-21, 2015 he underwent a research and practical internship at the Estonian Business School (Tallinn, Estonia) (in the framework of the TEMPUS project “Education for Leadership, Intelligence and Talent Encouraging” at Estonian Business School, Estonia), and during 2013-2016 he underwent an internship in the context of the Winter and Summer Schools “European Weeks” at the Higher Linguistic School in Częstochowa (Poland); Prof. Pavlyshyn L.H. from 01.06.2016 to 30.11.2016 was an intern at the International Institute of Innovations “Science-Education-Development” (Warsaw, Poland); in 2010 Assoc. Prof. Lytvyn L.M. improved the qualifications at the Summer Institute of the Ukrainian Association for the Development of Management and Business Education under the program “Innovative Technologies of Higher Education” at Higher Educational Institution “KROK” University of Economics and Law; Assoc. Prof. Morska N.L. underwent an internship at Higher Theological Academy of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (Poland) – from November 6, 2017, to November 19, 2017 – “Innovations in Science and Education: Challenges of the Present”. In 2015-2016, Associate Professors Kondratiuk L.R., Lytvyn L.M., Morska N.L., Petryshyn H.R., Poperechna H.A., Rozumovych O.A. underwent internships at the Higher Linguistic School in Częstochowa (Poland) in the framework of the project “The Innovative Methods and Technologies: the Newest in the European Educational Practice”, the gained work experience is embodied in the educational and methodical textbooks (currently 45) of teachers of the Department. For many years, the Department has been providing a Philosophy course for postgraduate students and applicants to prepare for the PhD exams. Philosophy courses for postgraduate students were taught by Zaliubovskyi P.M., Shanaida V.I., Rozumovych O.A., Kondratiuk L.R., and now by Buyak B.B. and Morska N.L.


Scientific Work

The main directions of research work of the Department are determined by work within the collective departmental themes: until 2014 “Actual Problems of Socio-economic and Spiritual Development of Ukraine”, from 2015 “Main Trends in the Formation of the Ukrainian Spiritual, Cultural and Socio-economic Space”.


According to the results of research work, the staff of the Department published more than 600 scientific papers and articles in professional foreign and domestic publications, including monographs: Buiak B.B.: “Political Education of Youth (Philosophical and Educational Aspects)”  in 2012; Pavlyshyn L.H.: “Volodymyr Vynnychenko: the Experience of Non-classical Thinking in the History of Ukrainian Philosophy” in 2013; Kydaniuk A.V.: “Socio-economic and Cultural Processes in the Western Ukrainian Village (1940-1950)” in 2018. Two doctoral dissertations in Philosophy were defended by Buiak B.B. (2013) and Pavlyshyn L.H. (2015).


The staff of the Department takes an active part in scientific conferences, symposiums, seminars in Ukraine and abroad: Belarus (Minsk), Italy (Rome), Poland (Kielce, Lublin, Częstochowa), the USA. Every year the Department holds reporting scientific conferences. Methodical seminars are systematically held at the Department. The results of the research work are implemented in the educational process.


Professors Buiak B.B. and Pavlyshyn L.H. are members of specialized scientific councils: Buiak B.B. – Specialized Scientific Councils D 64.053.07 in specialties 09.00.04 – Philosophical Anthropology, Philosophy of Culture, 09.00.10 – Philosophy of Education at H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University and D 58.053.04 in specialties 07.00.01 – History of Ukraine; 07.00.02 – World History at Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University; Professor Pavlyshyn L.H. – Specialized Academic Council (D 58.053.04; 07.00.01 – History of Ukraine, 07.00.02 – World History) at Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University. Professor Pavlyshyn L.H. is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Legal Studies (Warsaw, Poland). 


Professor Buyak B.B. is the coordinator of the University’s Bilateral Diploma Program together with the Higher Linguistic School in Częstochowa (Poland), Jan Długosz University (Częstochowa, Poland) and the Academic Exchange Programs. Under his leadership, students, masters and postgraduate students conduct scientific researches and defend PhD dissertations. Professor B.B. Buiak and Associate Professors Poperechna H.A. and Hrushko V.S. participate in obtaining PhD dissertations.


The main directions of the organization of students' research work are writing of scientific works, participating in conferences, working in problem solving groups. Traditionally, students of all faculties prepare scientific reports, approbating them at the University’s Annual Spring Student Research Conferences as part of the “Days of Science”, as well as at Scientific Conferences in Rivne, Chernihiv; some young scientists publish the results of their own research in the Students' Scientific Collection of TNPU. Teachers prepare students for participation in professional student competitions, in particular, students of the Faculty of History took part in the All-Ukrainian Philosophy Olympiads, where they won prizes: in 2006 at National University of Ostroh Academy (student V. Chornopyska – 2nd place), in 2018 at Borys Hrinchenko Kyiv University (Masters V. Kovbasa, I. Marchuk, P. Tymchak – 4th place and “Audience Choice Award”).


Since 2017, the Department has а graduate program. A new specialty was introduced at the Department “033. Philosophy”, in the field of study “03. Humanities”, specialization “Social Sciences”. The prestigious and popular qualification “Analyst of Social Processes” can be obtained at two educational levels: Bachelor and Master and two forms of study: full-time and part-time education.
