History of the Department

Establishment of the Faculty of History of Ternopil State Pedagogical Institute necessitated the creation of new departments. On August 31, 1993, the Department of World History and History Teaching Methodology was created: Professor Aleksiievets M.M. was the first Head of the Department. In 1998, in the result of the Department division, the Department of Ancient and Medieval History was created (Heads of the Department: Associate Professor Hontar T.M., Professor Zuliak I.S.), and the Department, headed by Professor Aleksiievets M.M., was renamed as the Department of New and Modern History and Methods of Teaching History. The Department of World History and Religious Studies was established in 2018 in the result of the reorganization and merging of the Departments of New and Modern History and Methods of Teaching History and the Department of Ancient and Medieval History. Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Bystrytska E.V. is the Head of the Department. Nowadays 14 teachers work at the Department, including 3 Doctors of Historical Sciences, Professors (Bystrytska E.V., Aleksiievets L.M., Aleksiievets M.M.), 8 PhDs in Historical Sciences, Associate Professors (Valion O.P., Hryhoruk N.A., Kostiuk L.V., Lakhmaniuk T.V., Seko Ya.P., Fedoriv I.O., Shama O.I.), 1 PhD in Historical Sciences (Pryidun S.V.), 1 PhD in Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor (Revutskyi M.P.), 1 PhD in Philosophical Sciences (Khalikov R.Kh), 1 PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor (Ihnatenko N.V.).

Scientific Work

The scientific interests of the Department include topical issues and problems of world history, religious studies and methods of teaching the historical disciplines in general secondary education institutions (GSEI) and higher education institutions (HEI). In particular, the teachers of the Department are involved in the study of processes of Religious Studies within the research theme “Religion and the Church in Ukraine in the Context of World and Social Transformations” (Bystrytska E.V., Hryhoruk N.A., Ihnatenko N.V., Kostiuk L.V., Lakhmaniuk T.V., Pryidun S.V., Revutskyi M.P., Seko Ya.P.,  Khalikov R.Kh., Shama O.I.); carry out scientific researches on topical issues of World History: historical, political, socio-economic and spiritual aspects of the development of Ukraine in the world (Prof. Aleksiievets L.M., Prof. Aleksiievets M.M.), revealing the laws of international politics of Europe, America, Asia and Africa in the Past and the Present Period (Valion O.P., Hryhoruk N.A., Kostiuk L.V., Pryidun S.V., Lakhmaniuk T.V., Fedoriv I.O., Shama O.I.); are concerned with the issues of modernization of the content and methods of teaching the historical disciplines of the GSEI and HEI. The Department has a research laboratory “Center for the Study of Spiritual Culture” (headed by Prof. Bystrytska E.V.), which cooperates with Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture (Turkish Republic); Sinan Pasha Center (Turkish Republic); Department of Religious Studies of the H.S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of NASU; Arsen Richynskyi Kremenets Medical School; Department of Culture, Religion and Nationalities of Ternopil Regional State Administration; Interdenominational Council of Churches and Religious Organizations of Ternopil Region; Regional Center of Shevchenko Scientific Society. The Religious Club “Dialogues”, created by the site (the Center for the Study of the Spiritual Culture of Ternopil) and an interactive map (the “Ternopil Monuments”) all operate within the research laboratory. The Department has postgraduate and doctorate programs in the specialty 07.00.02. World History. The Department is included in the implementation of the international agreement signed on 01.10.2019 between Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University and Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture. According to the agreement, in October 2019, teaching staff of the Faculty and students took part in a study course on the History of Islam and Spiritual Education in Turkey, held in Istanbul. The Department is a participant in the Human and Moral Values grant program under Erasmus +. The Department publishes an international collection of scientific papers “Ukraine-Europe-World: Series: History, International Relations” (editor-in-chief L.M. Aleksiievets), which is indexed in the international scientometric databases of RSCI and Index Copernicus. The members of the Department take part in Ukrainian and foreign scientific and scientific-practical conferences, congresses and seminars.


Educational and Methodical Work

The Department of World History and Religious Studies is an educational and scientific unit of the University, which activities are guided by the current Laws of Ukraine, orders of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, University Administration and the Dean's Office of the History Faculty. The Department graduates bachelors in the specialty 014.03 Secondary Education (History). Educational and methodological accompaniment was developed from all disciplines of the Department, namely: work programs, tasks for individual and independent work of students, tasks for current, modular and final control, criteria and norms of assessment of students' knowledge. Educational and methodical system of disciplines is constantly being improved and updated. The members of the Department have developed e-learning courses in the MOODLE system. All disciplines of the Department are prepared for distance learning. The teaching staff of the Department is modernizing the educational process. During lessons, teachers apply innovative teaching technologies. Much attention is paid to the organization of independent and individual work of students. Student scientific problem solving groups are actively working under the supervision of the teachers of the Department, they are writing term papers, bachelor’s and master's theses, in which students can creatively realize the acquired knowledge, skills in accordance with their scientific and cognitive interests. Cooperation with teachers, methodologists of the city and the region has been established: scientific and methodological seminars, trainings, pedagogical practice, round tables are held. The Department cooperates with the Minor Academy of Sciences, Ternopil District Methodical Cabinet, Ternopil Education Department.
