History of the Department
August, 1949 can be considered the official date of the establishment of the Department when Yevhen Illich Zorin was appointed as the Head of the Department of Physical Education at Kremenets Teachers Training Institute, and the date of creation of the Department of Physical Education can be considered October 20, 1949, when by the order of the Ministry of Education of the USSR the Head of the Department was officially approved in this position. At that time two lecturers and one laboratory assistant were working at the Department.
It is worth mentioning that the Department of Physical Education has become a professional and scientific training for many lecturers. In different years, among the workers of the Department were Deans of the Faculty of Physical Education: Burban F.M., Herts M.I., Yefimova N.H., Kichuk S.F., Omelianenko V.H.; Trochymiak B.Y., Master of Sport in Athletics, author of textbooks, manuals on the history of physical education and sports, Professor, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Shpytalnyi V.B., Professor of Krasnodar State University, Humeniuk S.V., Professor, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Shandryhos V.I., in the past the Head of the Department of Gymnastics and Sports Games, Bodnar Y.B., Head of the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education, Deputy Dean (present day).
In general, the lecturers of the Department provide teaching of Physical Education for Students of Non-specialized Faculties. Special subjects are related to the method of training specialists at the Faculty of Physical Education and the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology.
Educational Work
Annually, lecturers of the Department organize a summer camp with first year students of the Faculty of Physical Education, where students acquire skills in sports and pedagogical disciplines.
The Department has a university sports club “Pedahoh” (“Teacher”). Petrytsa P.M., PhD in Physical Education and Sport Sciences, is the Head of the sports club.
Lecturers of the Department organize and hold an annual competition in different sports that are popular among the students of the University, competitions among the University staff. Lecturers of the Department take an active part in competitions of University championships in different sports, in regional sports competitions among higher education institutions.
Scientific Work
The academic staff of the Department is working on the scientific problem “Preparing the Teacher to Work with Physical Education of Pupils”. The results of scientific work include publications, textbooks, methodical recommendations, series of printed abstracts, articles, speeches at scientific conferences of different level, the implementation of scientific research into the practice of physical education and sports.
In recent years, more than 160 scientific and methodical publications have been published in the field of study. Among them there are 8 manuals, 9 methodical developments and recommendations, 15 exercise books for practical and individual physical education classes for students, a terminological reference book, an atlas of combined developing exercises, and articles in specialized editions and publications that are included in international scientific database.
Regional scientific and methodological seminars “Innovative Approaches to Physical Education of Student Youth”, “Olympic Movement in Western Ukraine – Past and Present” are held annually. Many scientists not only from Ukrainian higher education institutions but also from foreign countries participate in them.
The “Sokrat” (“Socrates”) Creative Laboratory of Physical Education, Sports and Olympic Education was created to provide a better implementation of physical education issues at the Department of Physical Education.
