History of the Department

The Department was established in 1962 on the basis of Kremenets Pedagogical Institute under the name of the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education. In 1990, it was renamed into the Department of Theory of Physical Culture, and later in 1992 it was renamed as the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education.


The Heads of the Department were Valentyn Ivanovych Troshenok, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor (1962 – 1973), Bohdan Mykhailovych Shyian, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor (1973 – 1977, 1992 – 2012), Abram Isakovych Hurfinkel, PhD in Biological Sciences, Associate Professor (1977 – 1990), Volodymyr Hryhorovych Avramenko, PhD in Biological Sciences, Associate Professor (1990 – 1992), Volodymyr Ivanovych Naumchuk, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor (2013-2014), Yaroslav Bohdanovych Bodnar, PhD in Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Associate Professor, (2012-2013, 2014 – present day).


The activity of all generations of the academic staff has always been aimed at qualitative preparation of future specialists of physical culture and sports, individuals with developmental socio-cultural and human attitudes, capable of ensuring the transformation of the physical education process into self-education. The creative achievements, prestige and traditions of the Department were founded and multiplied by Zelinka S.V., Yefimova N.H., Horoshko V.M., Papusha V.H., Piven V.M., Demchyk F.M., Parfanovych R.M., Liashchuk R.P., Martynova A.O., Huniadi B.K., Drozd R.G., Hrester S.L., Yefimov G.V., Kichuk S.F., Matselukh Y.P., Lobankov V.S., Chetvertak U.V., Pakhomova T.H., Puhach M.M., Markus S.L., Trofymiak B.E., Badzian V.Y., Zelenskyi V.S., Bahniuk K.O. and other lecturers.


Good sportsmanship and honor of the Faculty, University, Ternopil region and Ukraine are worthily represented by football, volleyball, handball and basketball teams, which are multiple winners and prize-winners of European and Ukrainian student sports games. Sport performances and persistent work of Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine Vasyl Ivehesh, Honored Workers of Physical Culture and Sports of Ukraine: Volodymyr Avramenko, Volodymyr Honcharenko, Vasyl Hrabovenko, Rostyslav Liashchuk, Yurii Tymofieiev; Honored Coaches of Ukraine: Volodymyr Aksionov, Anatolii Arkhipov, Ivan Vovchanskyi, Anatolii Losiev, Vitalii Nazarchuk, Volodymyr Novokhatko, Tetiana Sevastianova-Herashchenko, Andrii Teleban, Volodymyr Turchyn and many other specialists allowed to raise the image of Ukraine.

About the Department

Focusing on the European standards of education, the staff of the Department demonstrates a creative approach in training of future specialists in physical culture and sports, introduces innovative ideas in the content of the educational process. At the same time, curricula and level of implementation of all forms of courses, their educational and methodological support, are being improved, and students’ independent work is being modernized.


The Department maintains close creative relations with National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport, Lviv State University of Physical Culture, H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University, K.D. Ushynsky South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University, Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University, Lesya Ukrainka East European National University, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohienko National University, higher educational institutions and research centers of Russia and Poland, sports federations and Ukrainian Association of Football.


A sound basis for the successful functioning of the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education is solid educational and material base: a sports hall, a hall for physical games and rhythmic gymnastics, a gymnasium, open playgrounds, a football pitch, and lecture halls.


Scientific Work

The scientific interests of the Department lecturers are related to the improvement of professional training of future specialists of physical culture and sports in higher education institutions and optimization of the process of physical education. Graduate school has been successfully functioning on the basis of the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education since 1993 and in 2006 doctoral studies in the specialty of “Physical Culture, Physical Education of Different Population Groups” were opened. During the functioning of postgraduate studies over 25 PhD theses were completed and successfully defended under the guidance of the Department lecturers.


In 2004 the Department started the international scientific-practical conference “Relevant Problems of Development of the “Sport for All” Movement: Experience, Achievements, Tendencies”, with participation of leading domestic scientists and specialists of Ukraine, Canada, Belarus, Poland, Moldova (2004, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2019).


According to the UEFA Convention on the Mutual Recognition of Coaching Qualifications, the Department, together with the Ternopil Region Football Federation, provides the training of mass football coaches under the C program of the Ukrainian Football Association diploma.


Students’ scientific and problem solving groups successfully work under the guidance of the lecturers, and the best students represent the Faculty at All-Ukrainian competitions of students’ scientific works and Olympiads in the theory and methods of physical education. Among them there are winners: Vlasiuk Olha, Bodnar Viktoriia, Romanyshyn Yuliia, Lypka Konstiantyn and Kucher Tetiana.
