The Department of Theory and Methods of Olympic and Professional Sports graduates students of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in specialty 017. Physical Culture and Sports and provides training in the following specialties: 014.11. Secondary Education (Physical Culture), 016. Special Education (Physical Rehabilitation).
The main research areas of the Department teachers are: improving the system of professional and pedagogical training of specialists in the field of physical education and sports; optimization of athletes’ training process; current problems of improving the physical qualities of athletes in various sports; current issues of theory and practice of Olympic education; theoretical and methodological aspects of training athletes; place and importance of general physical training in the process of educating and training of athletes of different ages; improving the professional training of students of the Faculty of Physical Education in the process of athletics; improving the system of training specialists in athletics; tourist potential of Podillia’s cultural heritage; scientific and methodological fundamentals of long-term technical and tactical training in freestyle wrestling.
The Department has a significant material and technical base. The auditorium fund of the Department consists of an athletics arena, stadium, shot put fields, two playgrounds for sports games, two tennis courts, two game halls, gymnastic hall, aerobics hall, wrestling hall, athletic gymnastics hall, ski base, 3 auditoriums for lectures and practical classes, 3 computer classes, two classrooms. To intensify the educational process at the Department, the latest technical means and teaching technologies are widely used, which are based on integrated computer technologies. All areas of study are provided with methodological developments. Methodical instructions for studying disciplines (theoretical courses), for passing pedagogical, practical, pre-diploma practices, performance of laboratory, practical and individual independent works, etc. are issued and 80% of the subjects materials are included in the program “Moodle”.
Teachers of the department work closely with the Academy of Physical Education in Wroclaw (Poland). In order to improve their scientific and methodological level, teachers underwent internships at this University. In 2018, the Department teachers underwent internships in Czestochowa (Poland).
Sportspeople are trained in groups to improve their skills in all types of athletics, cross-country skiing, biathlon, swimming, tourism and rowing, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, athletics and weightlifting. The Department cooperates with children’s sports schools of the city and region, sports associations, departments of physical culture and sports of Ternopil City Council, organizes and conducts sports events of the city and region.
Currently, many talented athletes study at the Department.
Scientific Work
The scientific interests of the Department teachers are aimed at improving the professional and pedagogical training of specialists in the disciplines of the Department, methods of training young athletes in cyclic sports and training of athletes in Olympic and professional sports, development of model characteristics of young athletes at different stages of their sports training, professional training of specialists in physical culture and sports, theory and methods of sports training, freestyle wrestling. The scientific work of the Department teachers results in training manuals, scientific articles, abstracts of reports at scientific conferences, congresses, seminars. The Department has created conditions for students’ research work. Students annually make reports at the reporting scientific conference of the University, their articles and abstracts are published in the “Student Scientific Bulletin”. According to the results of their researches, students prepare course, diploma and master’s theses.
Sports and Mass Work
Student sports and mass work is active: the championships of the Faculty in athletics, track and field cross and regular physical training are held systematically. The Department students often win the Athletics Championship among students of the higher education institutions of Western Ukraine. The competition has been held since 1998 on the first Wednesday and Thursday of October. Students of 15 universities from 8 cities of Ukraine (more than 150 participants) take part in the competition. Students are trained in groups in order to improve their skills in all types of athletics, skiing, biathlon, swimming, tourism and rowing, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling and weightlifting. The department cooperates with children’s sports schools of the city and region. Sports associations of the departments of physical culture and sports of Ternopil City Council organize and conduct sports events and traditional open championship in athletics in Western Ukraine.

Participants of the Olympic Games and World Championships: Virastiuk R. (1996, 2004) in shot put, Zozulia V. (2000, 2004) in athletic walking, Balakhonova A. (2000) in pole vaulting.
World record holder: Baboval O. in 2000m running hurdles indoors.
Multiple champions and prize-winners of the USSR and Ukraine championships: Semiraz O. in long jump, Karmeliuk A. in high jump, Tvardovskyi I. in 3000m running hurdles.

Dmytro Pidruchnyi, biathlete, champion and prize-winner of the Winter Universiade, prize-winner of the European Biathlon Championships, participant and prize-winner of the Biathlon World Cup stages, participant of the Olympic Games in Sochi.
