Department of Theory and Practice of Translation
History of the Department
The preparation of students of specialty “Translation” at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University has begun in 2003 at the Department of English Philology. The legal basis for the provision of educational translation services was the issuance by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine of the corresponding license (Series AA №521623 for bachelor’s training, field of study 0305 Philology, specialty 6.030500 Translation), according to which the training of specialists is carried out within the licensed admission, which includes 50 people (Decision of the State Attestation Commission of February 25, 2003, Protocol No. 43).
Professional training of students of the specialty “Translation” is conducted by the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation. It was created in 2004, a year after opening the specialty “Translation”. Tetiana Serhiivna Oliinyk, PhD in Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, became the Head of the Department, and held this position until March 2015. Associate Professor Kravets Svitlana Volodymyrivna had been acting as the Head of the Department until August 2015, and since then the Department has been headed by Tetiana Olehivna Tsepeniuk, PhD in Philological Sciences.
Academic and Educational Work
The Department of Theory and Practice of Translation prepares students of the specialty “Translation” in two degrees:
Bachelor qualification: Bachelor of Philology, Translator from the Main Foreign Language.
MSc qualification: Master of Philology, English Translator, Teacher of English and the Second Foreign Language.
The staff of the Department provides teaching of English practical course, theoretical disciplines in contrastive linguistics and translation, literature and linguistic studies of English-speaking countries, special courses in translation disciplines. Practical English courses are also taught by native speakers from the United States (based on a collaboration agreement with the Ryan Research Center). Students improve their oral and written skills by participating in various activities and projects that take place in the city and region. A long-term cooperation with local self-government bodies, charitable foundations and NGOs contributes to this.
Konkulovskyi V.V., who is responsible for educational work at the Department, together with curators provide students’ involvement in a variety of educational activities such as the International Translator’s Day, Freshman Day, Faculty Day, English Cinema Week. Students, together with curators and teachers, go to the theater, cinema, and libraries, attend literary readings and meetings with famous people. The Department regularly holds a competition for the best fiction translation, which results in a collection of students’ translations “Pegasus”. Students of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation are active participants and winners of various translation competitions, which are held in leading institutions of higher education of Ukraine.
Scientific Work
Teachers of the Department constantly participate in international, all-Ukrainian and University scientific conferences. There are various ways of their professional development: internships, participation in scientific and methodological seminars, online conferences and more. The result of scientific work and internships is the issuance of textbooks, manuals, monographs, publication of articles, etc.
Students are also active participants in the scientific work: they work in problem solving groups in different fields of philological research, take part in student scientific contests, present papers or abstracts at student scientific conferences of different rank, perform bachelor’s and master’s theses. Each year, students represent the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation at the All-Ukrainian Translation Contest.
The teachers of the Department cooperate with the Ternopil Branch of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where they manage the students’ scientific works and conduct practical classes in English.
