History of the Department


The Department of Romanic and Germanic Philology, as a separate educational unit, has been functioning at the University since 2002 within the Faculty of Foreign Languages. The first Head of the Department was Bubniak R.A., PhD in Philological Sciences, Associate Professor. In September, 2008 Olha Vasylivna Kosovych, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor became the Head of the Department. In September, 2010 the Department was renamed into the Department of French and Second Foreign Language, and since June 1, 2016 it has the name of the Department of Romanic and Germanic Philology.


There are 9 teachers at the Department: 1 Doctor of Sciences, 4 Associate Professors, 5 PhDs, 1 Lecturer, and 5 assistants:

Academic Work


The Department provides educational process in the following specialties:

8.02030302 Language and literature (English),

014.02 Secondary education (Language and literature (English)),

035.04 Philology. Germanic languages and literature (translation included), (English language and literature),

014.01 Secondary education (Ukrainian language and literature).


The Department prepares students for their specialty:

“French as the First Foreign Language”, 

“French as the Second Foreign Language”,

“Professional Foreign Language”,

“Practical Course of Foreign Language (English)”.


Teachers of the Department (Kosovych O.V., Bubniak R.A., Pezhynska O.M., Permiakova O.H.) are members of the jury of the city and regional Language Olympiad in French, cooperate with the Small Academy of Sciences, consult students on DELF-DALF exams, student application forms. Give letters of recommendation to students from the embassies of France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland. The Department actively and successfully cooperates with the France-Ukraine Exchange Association within the framework of the concluded agreement. Therefore, students studying French have the opportunity of a linguistic internship in France.


Scientific Work


The scientific interests of the Department are directed in the following research directions:

- problems of Romanic linguistics;

- literary critical discourse;

- modern methods of teaching a foreign language.

For several years, the Department of Romanic and Germanic Philology has maintained a close relationship with various universities in Ukraine and abroad: with the Department of Romanic Philology at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Institute of Philology of Kyiv Shevchenko National University, Department of Romanic Languages of Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University, Department of French Philology and Translation at Yurii Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, with the Department of English Language Practice in Drohobych Ivan Franko University, Department of Romanic Philology at Kharkiv Hryhorii Skovoroda National Pedagogical University, cooperated with the Alliance Française - Kiev, Lviv.


The Lecturers of the Department passed language training abroad (Bubniak H.M. (Orad College, Clermont-Ferrant Academy), Pezhynska O.M. (Academic Society of Michal Baludiansky, Bratislava), Kosovych A.V. (Higher Linguistic School, Czestochowa, Poland), and in leading domestic higher education establishments (Lviv Ivan Franko National University, Chernivtsi Yurii Fedkovych National University, Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University, Drohobych I. Franko State Pedagogical University).


Building Personalities


The Department holds a number of events (French Language Week dedicated to the International Francophone Day, French language connoisseurs contests, concerts, exhibitions, etc.), as well as the French Spring, during which various cultural and educational events that involve students are held.
